Description

Wooly Head is located on W coast of Nagai I., in Shumagin Is., Aleutian Range

History

So named by fishermen prior to 1871 because of the violent gusts of wind called "woolies" experienced there; published by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey (USC&GS) on an 1882 coast chart. This term is considered to be derived from a Patagonian word for a "gust of "wind" or may be descriptive of the "whitefoam formed on the water wind."
